Prostacyclin and vascular disease

چکیده
We hypothesize tha t prostacyclin (PG I2) is an anti-atherosclerotic hormone and that atherosclerosis develops when endothelial P G I2 synthetase is inhibited by lipid peroxides. Serum lipid peroxides occur in low-density lipoproteins (LDL). LDL lipid peroxides are elevated in common types of hyperlipoproteinaemias, P G I2 generation is im paired in atherosclerosis, and infusion of synthetic P G I2 into patients alleviates symptoms resulting from arteriosclerosis obliterans, central retinal vein occlusion or spontaneous angina.

Chronological response of prostacyclin changes to moderately low doses of radiation in Rat cervical spinal cord
Background: Study of vascular and its secretory profile changes is an important issue in pathogenesis of radiation myelopathy. This paper reports the prostacyclin concentration changes after low-moderate doses of X-irradiation within a short period of time. Materials and Methods: Cervical cords of Wistar rats were irradiated to doses of 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 6 Gy X-rays. After 24 hours, 2 and 13 ...
متن کاملProstacyclin: An Inflammatory Paradox
Prostacyclin (PGI(2)) is a member of the prostaglandin family of bioactive lipids. Its best-characterized role is in the cardiovascular system, where it is released by vascular endothelial cells, serving as a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation. In recent years, prostacyclin (PGI(2)) has also been shown to promote differentiation and inhibit proliferation in vascular smooth...
متن کاملProstacyclin therapy for pulmonary arterial hypertension: new directions.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is characterized by vasoconstriction and smooth muscle cell proliferation of the pulmonary arterioles, as well as in situ thrombosis of the small pulmonary arteries. Prostacyclin is involved in PAH vascular remodeling. It is unclear if decreased prostacyclin in the lungs is a cause or a consequence of PAH, but the relative lack of prostacyclin and its posit...
متن کاملAbnormalities of vascular prostaglandins in Henoch-Schönlein purpura.
The ability of plasma to support prostacyclin like activity from human umbilical arterial rings was studied in 17 patients with Henoch-Schönlein purpura and 17 controls matched for age and sex. Plasma from 13 of the 17 patients showed a diminished or absent ability to support prostacyclin like activity in vitro. Six patients whose plasma had a low or absent ability to support prostacyclin like ...
متن کاملCongenital diaphragmatic hernia: association between pulmonary vascular resistance and plasma thromboxane concentrations.
After repair of a Bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia, shunting of blood away from the lungs produced progressive hypoxaemia in a neonate. Changes in plasma concentrations of the vasoconstrictor prostanoid thromboxane were associated with changes in pulmonary vascular resistance in this infant. Plasma concentrations of the vasodilator prostanoid prostacyclin were also monitored during acute changes ...
متن کاملEarly Postmenopausal Phase Is Associated With Reduced Prostacyclin-Induced Vasodilation That Is Reversed by Exercise Training
The postmenopausal phase is associated with an accelerated rate of rise in the prevalence of endothelial dysfunction and hypertension and the incidence of cardiovascular disease is also higher in postmenopausal than in premenopausal women of similar age. Although much is known about the beneficial effects of estrogen on vascular function, the mechanisms by which changes in the hormonal environm...
